New online notification process goes live
5 May 2009
A new online business application process, developed by the European Commission and which allows businesses to notify the relevant authorities about dangerous products, has been launched.
In Ireland, the NCA is the authority that needs to be notified under Article 5(3) of the General Product Safety Directive- 2001/95/EC, which states that producers and distributors must notify the relevant competent authorities about dangerous products. The NCA, and other authorities, then notify the European Commission - DG SANCO - of these applications through the Rapid Alert Notification system (RAPEX).
Producers and distributors now have the option of making these notifications electronically. The new process will make it easier for businesses which require to notify national authorities in a number of EU States at the same time.
The NCA stresses that it is not mandatory to use the online service, adding that notifications can continue to be made by post, email or fax. Businesses are encouraged to read the guidelines before using the application.
