Banned products

The European Commission, in consultation with Member States, can ban products that pose a danger or health risks to consumers. Below is a list of products that have been banned from being placed on EU markets.

Leather Products that contain Dimethylfumerate (DMF)

DMF can be found in little pouches or sachets fixed inside leather furniture or in shoeboxes, where it is used to prevent damage by moulds during storage in a humid climate or during transport. All distributors and retailers must ensure that they do not place products containing DMF on the market. DMF can eventually come into contact with the skin and may cause dermatitis, skin itching, irritation, burns, and in some cases, acute respiratory difficulty.

Before you buy a product, you should always ask the retailer if it contains DMF. If it does, do not buy it and contact us with the details of the product and retailer.

Novelty Cigarette lighters

All importers, distributors and retailers of cigarette lighters must ensure that all novelty lighters are prohibited from being placed on the Irish market. They must also ensure that low cost non refillable lighters are child resistant.

Novelty lighters can be attractive to young children and lead to accidents.

Any person who fails to comply with such a direction may be guilty of an offence and liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding €3,000 and/or imprisonment for three months.

If you find one of these products for sale on the market, contact us with the details of the product and the retailer.
