Mortgage interest relief

You are entitled to claim tax relief on the interest you pay on your home mortgage.

New mortgages, top-up loans, home improvement loans and re-mortgages all qualify for such relief, once they are used to purchase, repair, develop or improve your sole or main residence, which must be situated in the state.

How do you claim your benefit?

The tax relief is given at source, by your lender, either in the form of a reduced mortgage payment or a credit to the account you use to make mortgage repayments.

You should apply for tax relief as soon as you start repaying your mortgage using your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) and your mortgage account number as provided by your bank.

You can do this by:

  • downloading the TRS1 form from revenue.ie
  • getting the TRS1 form from your mortgage lender
  • ringing the TRS Helpline on 1890 46 36 26.

You may need to re-apply to Revenue for tax relief in certain circumstances. For example, if you switch or top up your mortgage.
