Problems with claims
Reasons for disputes
Your claim can be refused for a number of reasons:
- what you are claiming for is not covered by your policy
- one of the conditions in your policy is not met - for example, you have not reported a theft, burglary or accident to the Gardai
- the damage is not covered by a specific risk covered by your policy - for example, it may be caused by wear and tear
- your insurer has evidence that you did not fill in your initial application form accurately or truthfully - for example, if you had a pre-existing illness or condition that you did not tell your insurer about
- with some policies, a burglary claim may be refused if your alarm is not on and there is no-one in your home at the time of a break-in.
If your claim is refused, your insurance company or broker must write to you to explain the reasons why your claim was refused and give you details of how to appeal the decision.
